If you’re looking for inspiration in terms of gameplay, Dragon Ball FighterZ is an excellent reference, and Budokai Tenkaichi 4 could benefit from incorporating one of its more visually impressive elements.
Dragon Ball game enthusiasts are in for a treat as there are exciting developments in the franchise. Dragon Ball: The Breakers is still exploring its unique asynchronous multiplayer feature and could possibly remain relevant for some time. Although Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 are winding down, they still have upcoming updates and enhancements. The long-awaited Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 is finally coming into view, and while the game’s specifics remain a mystery, it is currently one of the most anticipated releases among Dragon Ball fans.
When the release of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 happens, it will require the older generation to pass on the torch. The fundamental fighting abilities of Dragon Ball Xenoverse can be used as a good inheritance, and BT4 could also adopt Xenoverse’s “What If?” storylines. While no one anticipates Budokai Tenkaichi 4 to outperform FighterZ in terms of competitive fighting games, there are valuable lessons to be learned from the Arc System Works title. Choosing the appropriate lessons could significantly enhance Budokai Tenkaichi 4’s gameplay, particularly if it helps the tag team situations to reach their full potential.

The Team Battles In Budokai Tenkaichi 4 Should Be Prioritized
So far, the Budokai Tenkaichi series has mainly focused on one-on-one battles. Although a team system was introduced in Budokai Tenkaichi 2, and Tenkaichi Tag Team was designed as a 2v2 game, the gameplay style always favored two fighters recreating pivotal moments from Dragon Ball. With the team system in place, players could also execute transformations and fusions during gameplay, taking the Dragon Ball simulation to a whole new level. However, the lengthy transitions between fighters made it evident that tag teams were more of an added bonus than a primary feature.
It has been more than ten years since the last time players had a chance to play Budokai Tenkaichi, and there have been significant changes in the gaming industry since then. Spike Chunsoft, the series developer, has improved its tag gameplay in subsequent arena fighters, resulting in smoother transitions between characters and better integration of team members during fights. The development team for Budokai Tenkaichi 4 has not been announced yet, but these developments could be incorporated into the old Dragon Ball series. However, if the goal is to draw inspiration from a Dragon Ball tag fighter, then FighterZ, another DBZ title, should be the one to look to.
Tag Super System In Dragon Ball FighterZ Is Too Good To Forget
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a game that revolves around tag fighting and is considered to be a spiritual successor to Marvel vs. Capcom. Although fusions are not included in the game due to practical reasons, FighterZ still makes the best use of its combatants despite shrinking the team size from five to three members. The introduction of assist options in the game has further improved the gameplay experience. The concept of assists has been successfully implemented in arena fighters such as Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games and should definitely be carried over to future versions of the game. Additionally, the team’s super combo mechanic should also be retained.
To enhance the complexity of Budokai Tenkaichi 4, players could add team synergy by utilizing a special move and assist button combination during a combo or super. This allows another character to join in and execute their level 1 or level 3 super, adding an element of safety and dealing significant damage. To achieve this, the game developers must examine each character’s unique super abilities and determine if they can combine effectively with other characters. This feature would differentiate team battles from traditional 1v1 fights and give it a distinct identity. By incorporating the older game’s team mechanics, Budokai Tenkaichi 4 would pay homage to FighterZ and make the game even more enjoyable.
